Heat pumps are rapidly becoming the environmentally favoured way of heating outdoor swimming pools and are a cheap, practical & efficient way for a domestic pool to be heated and extend the swimming season. Generally for every 1 kw of energy used by a heat pump (only requiring minimal energy to operate a compressor and a fan motor) it will produce 5kw of heat energy.
In basic terms the condensing and evaporating gases inside the heat pump absorbs heat from the air outside and then transfers it to the pool water - effectively working like a backwards fridge - it doesn't create heat using energy it captures and trasfers it!
